Hidden in a North Austin strip mall, Sarah's Mediterranean Grill and Market has one of the tastiest and cheapest menus around. The restaurant features freshly made Middle Eastern foods with
vegetarian and halal meat options. So if you're looking for a way to fill your tummy with delicious food, simply scrape together a couple bucks and head to Sarah's.
Instead, go to a local butcher and ask for some beef short ribs (more flavor than filet). Or, try braising one of northern Italy's most famous cuts, Osso Bucco (more meat than Veal Piccata). And,
once in a while, succumb to the reach-in aisle at the supermarket, grab a 7-bone slab of chuck, and get creative with a pot roast recipe. All provide that quintessential, home-filling aroma, best
breathed in while looking out the window at the fall colors.
That night we eat lamb in slow cooker
with light chilli seasoning in the 'voorkamer' of a 'huisie' just off the main drag! Recently
opened by a couple of English journalists who reveal that they just 'stayed'. There are about a dozen other diners and the conversation flows easy over the room. Nathan and his wife are building
restorers, her Mom is visiting from a farm deeper in the Karoo, Sally and Khati are intrepid explorers from Canada, a quiet couple at the back of us eavesdropping......... all on a comet quest.
Guyana - Duck, chicken or lamb curry with rice are the main dishes for the birthday celebration. A family member bakes a fruit, black or sponge for the birthday girl/boy to cut. The birthday person
will wear something fancy.
You can serve both on their own or with brown rice if you're allowed to. Make big batches, split and freeze them in portion sized bags for days when you have less time.
On the way to the town of Golden, our next destination, we stopped to hike to Johnston Canyon, a worthwhile trek! The falls were splendid! The journey curried lamb took us less than an hour. It was a
little crowded, even with the rain, but by the time we reached the falls, there were very few people around. On the road again, we encountered four majestically antlered elk! They know they are VIPs,
and don't allow us people to hurry them along. They promenade along the road and graze gracefully by the roadside.
Finale, Part 1: Carla wins again, in her fourth straight impressive performance. Fabio, who cooks well, still does not manage to get an mild
Creole taste into his food, and it costs him.
Arpeggio off of Airport Blvd might be my most frequently visited healthy restaurant. Its dishes consist of humus, warm pita with tzatziki sauce, falafel, gyros, kebabs, and lamb shank. This will
please both vegetarians and carnivores alike. The atmosphere is very awesome and immediately gives you that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. The runner up is Verts, a Turkish restaurant where everything
is always fresh. Do give it a try and ask for the Berlin-inspired Kebab.
